10 Things That Would Make Cars More Family Friendly

October 10, 2008

  1. Integrated Wipes Dispenser - to keep the endless supply of cleansing wipes.
  2. Standard Bluetooth - for hands free cell phone use. It's illegal to use your phone any other way in several states and with kids in the car, we have enough distractions.
  3. Integrated Trash Containers - because the container hanging on the seat back is not so spiffy, nor is trash all over the floor. We live in our cars - not having a trash can does not make sense!
  4. Bigger Cupholders  -  instead of four cupholders up front, how about one or two that can hold an oversized cup or water bottle? I spent my last pregnancy balancing my 16 oz water bottle on my lap while driving, and often got soaked when it spilled.
  5. More Controls on the Steering Wheel - where we can reach them.
  6. Rethink the 60/40 Split in Vehicles with Third Rows - In most vehicles with this combination, the third row is inaccessible when you have two latch equipped carseats installed. A center fold down is much more family friendly.  Or how about...
  7. Integrated Carseats/booster seats - With all the aftermarket options, finding one that fits your car and your kid can be an expensive challenge. User error is high on most carseats. The auto industry could make our lives so much simpler and safer by designing car specific, integrated seating for our kids.
  8. A Voice Recorder/Calender/Memo - grocery lists, meetings, to do lists, phone lists, birthday reminders... Having your car keep you organized would  so helpful. Not quite a personal assistant but close!
  9. Seatback Organizers with flip down trays for snacks and homework
  10. A Cone of Silence

Ok perhaps that last one is beyond current technology. But a mom can dream...
