Dashboard Confessions: Grabby Hands & the Automobile

July 18, 2008

You know those plastic handles on the roof of the car? The one's you grab onto when your designated driver makes a sharp left turn and your beverage of choice goes flying onto the dashboard? The ones your grandma never ever lets go of? We've heard them called everything from "Oh (expletive)" grips to "Terror Handles". The car manufacturers say they are to facillitate entry and exit from the vehicle but those of us with spouses who like to drive, know better.

Well there is finally a use for these handles that does not have to do with whether the light was actually yellow or red.

This clever product from Kicky Pants is sure to keep babies and toddlers busy, as well as toys off the floor, meaning a much quieter ride and less reason to be afraid! Very easy to install, you just stretch the Auto Mobile from door to door in the back seat, velcro-ing the strap around the aforementioned ceiling handles.

They come with 3 rings (but, you can add more with Linkadoos, if you wish) that you can hang your child's favorite toys from to create stimulating back seat scenery. The traveling mobiles I had with my kids were always kind of cheesy, I love the idea of creating my own with whatever the child is most interested in at the time.

The Auto Mobile will help you to create perfect back seat entertainment for newborns and toddlers. Kicky Pants is also an an eco-friendly clothing company that has a fabulous selection of bamboo fiber clothing that is high quality, stylish, and very, very soft.

And now for your confession and a chance to win it - we are giving away one Auto Mobile in Blue with Brown Dots!

Tell us in the comments:

1.What do you call your car handles?

2. What favorite toy your child won't leave the house with out?

One lucky winner will be chosen on Friday July 25, at 11pm.

Well, we called our handles "oh sh!t" handles until our 2 year old learned the word, we now call them "oh goooooodness" handles and in a small southern toddler voice, you can hear "oh goooooooodness, mama" in the back seat of the car, often. Our son will not leave the house without, "John America", a little yellow plane. On a beach trip to Florida we took our 2 year old son into a beach shop so he could choose one souvenir. Instead of picking, shells, buckets, or anything beachy, he picked out this yellow airplane. He went to grab it one day so we could leave the house and I asked him, "what's that planes name?" Out of no where he says, "John America". Not sure where this came from, we don't know anyone named John and I guess he has just picked up America from hearing it. Anyway, we laugh all the time when we leave the house and say, "don't forget John America".

We just call them handles. My daughter will not leave without her Laugh & Learn Puppy.

Posted by: Christine | July 23, 2008 10:23 PM

I guess we just call them the hanger thingies but now I'm wishing I call them something fun like I'm reading about in the comments. Oh well. As for the toy that must come with us, it's a star rattle that has a different type of linky toy shape coming off each of the star's points.

We call it the hang-on handle. My kids bring whatever baby is their favorite at the moment (baby being their fav. stuffed animal of the moment). Older kids-ipod.

We too are unoriginal and call them "oh sh*t" bars. I have often used those exact words while grabbing on for dear life driving through the snowy mountains. Now that we have a little one, it's definitely time to come up with a new name! We cannot leave home without our binky. No toy attachments yet (he has a few favorites) but I have already been advised that when he does attach to one, go buy 3 of them in case you ever lose one.

never called them anything in fact dont think I have ever used them in a sentence - my grandson wouldnt leavae the house without a match box car!

Posted by: Carol Drury | July 24, 2008 7:14 AM

We call them the "oh sh!t" handles, too, but I guess when our son's old enough we'll have to thing of something less risque. Right now, he won't leave the house without his blanky my sister made him, and his little purple elephant from his jungle mat, that you pull down & stretch out it's string and it climbs back up. Hard to describe, but he just loooooves it

What a great idea! Make sure you only install soft toys though so people don't get hit in the head! I guess I call them "handles". I'm boring, what can I say. :-) We have no favorite toys that leave the house because I keep toys in the car. I have travel magna doodles, hot wheels and a squeeky soft rattle toy for the baby :-)

Posted by: Heather | July 25, 2008 5:12 PM

1. I have it on good authority that those handles have come to be called the "Oh Sh*t Bar" by most young men. I use to hang the items I got out of the dry cleaners from them on the way home but don't remember calling them anything.

Posted by: Marie Noguerole | July 25, 2008 6:01 PM

We don't really have a name for it. My daughter always has to take a doll.

1. don't have a special name for car handles 2. teddy bear

Posted by: Lily Kwan | July 25, 2008 8:36 PM

We call them "Oh S**t grips" but since my son is picking up words now we will be changing that. I like the oh goodness bars a person posted earlier. I will have to use that instead. As long as my son has a car with him he is good. It usally doesn't matter which one. He switches favorites.
