7 Inspirations to Help Name a New Car
October 21, 2008
So you've got a hot new (or new to you) ride and need to come up with a name. Where to start? Here's some inspiration:
- Let the color be your guide. Got a red car? How about "Hot Stuff" or "The Tomato"? Consider your car's personality and temperament. Lemons can be blue.
- Let the car model be your guide. Not so original, but sometimes it's good to go with the obvious. Got an Oddysey? How about "Oddball"?
- Check your plates. Sometimes great names are hidden in or inspired by the numbers and letters issued to you by the dmv. My college ride was PRNSUY - and became "Prince Huey". A bonus: you won't need vanity plates and won't forget your own plate numbers.
- Listen to the wisdom of a toddler. He thinks the car must be called "Gloop"? He may be onto something...
- Take your favorite hobby or destination and tack on a mobile, taxi or ride. Spend all your time on Crown Valley Parkway in traffic? That's the CVP Taxi you're piloting
- Look to the animal kingdom. That big black van? How's about we call it Shamu? That little silver Prius? Hedgehog!
- If all else fails, mine the Disney classics for characters. How can you hate an SUV called Dopey? Or a wagon named Thumper? Personally, if I had a black Hummer these days I would slap on a white stripe and call it Cruella De Ville.
Curious to know more about the (model) name your car came with? Check out this article from CNN Money that decodes the meaning behind car names. What it fails to explain is why entry level cars always have names that seem to say "try a little harder buddy... Just focus, aspire to drive something better! Maybe if you were a little more fit and had less of an accent, you could drive something with a more alpha sounding name..."
