Link Love: Crushing News, Cube Love and Big Family Travel Tips

From Miss Mota Mouth this week comes a shocking revelation that we find especially crushing...

Which cars are getting crushed?
Some cars are squeaky clean, have leather seats, full navigation systems, V6's or V8 engines with far less than 30,000 miles on them. They still have that new car smell and in some cases, will still have bits of protective film covering the interior parts. For the most part they could never be considered damaged except for the odd scratch or ding that comes from brushing against the car or pulling a suitcase out of the trunk.

Maybe the Smart Car isn't worthless to enthusiasts!

Yes, that is a Smart Car outperforming a Ferrari on a drag strip. It's actually a Smartuki, a Smart car with a Suzuki GSX-R 1100 CC 4-cylinder "Hyabusa" engine installed.

Smart cars are the laughing stock of the car world right now, overpriced, undersized and underpowered, with embarrassing 0-60 times, Premium fuel requirements, and a clownish demeanor. New in the US for 2008, they've been running strong in Europe for a few years now. So some enterprising Brits figured out that the Smart's entire drivetrain bolts right out and one can with little pain drop in a 10,000 RPM screamer from a sportbike.

Now I know this is a family car magazine, and the 2-seat FourTwo doesn't really have much relevance to us even in its' 50-hp stock capacity, so what interest do we have in the 180-hp overstuffed screamer? Every! It's a marvel of modern technology! It's a go-kart with a phonebooth on top! It does wheelies and can burn rubber all day! It simply looks like it's a lot of fun, and my mid-life crisis is inching closer and closer...

A Quick Look Inside The LA Auto Show

The atmosphere was a little somber but the LA Auto show still held much to see. Tons of concept cars, and an honest move towards green. Trends noted included suicide doors (interesting in this market), rear/side view mirrors being replaced by integrated cameras, and more ways to piggyback smaller, more eco friendly vehicles onto your car. There was a definite downtrend in oversized SUV's and a veritable crossover vehicle explosion.

Dad Plays in a Pontiac: Part One - The G5

Pontiac recently treated me and a few other writers to test five of their current models at the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving in Phoenix, AZ. I learned today’s Pontiac brand is both performance-driven, and rather practical. Over the next few days I will be sharing my experiences as a work-a-day father of four pushing Pontiac’s G5, G6, Vibe, Solstice and G8 models on the racetrack and in high-intensity safety drills.

Full disclosure:

  1. Pontiac/GM paid for my 2-day excursion – and a very nice dinner to boot!
  2. In nostaligic memory of my very first car, there is a ’64 Pontiac Catalina-shaped soft spot on my heart – it wasn’t hard to get me excited seeing what the modern Pontiac has to offer.

I’ll tell you about the Pontiac G5 first. This is Pontiac’s entry-level model, in a class with the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, and Scion tC. Pontiac states the standard 148 hp engine achieves 35 MPH (highway), while the G5 GT has 171 hp and gets about 32 MPH. I would call the dash and interior trim design “stylish” and “conservative” – nothing jarring, everything in the expected place, consistent and re-assuring. It had an unexpectedly roomy back seat, with plenty space in the rear bench for this leggy 6 footer. It probably could seat 3 adults across without awkward elbow-tucking or thigh rubbing.

I took the G5 and the G5 GT on a short autocross track set up for us. Autocross is a short, flat course with tight twists and turns marked by cones, keeping the whole thing inside a small parking lot-sized plot. Most impressive in the G5 was experiencing GM’s StabiliTrak in action – I never once felt even slightly out of control despite auto-racing-newbie choppy turns effected while my foot flew between full-tilt gas and brake. Before coming to the event I had joked with the wife about how sorry Pontiac would be when I rolled one of their cars, but after a lot of hard driving I never so much as fishtailed.

With the large back bench, great gas mileage, responsive and powerful engine, I can imagine a family's G5 the the role of a dad’s commuter car. Zippy in traffic, only sipping gas on the home/office route, and Dad would know the kids are safe and comfortable in the roomy back seat when he's got them.

Will SugarTrip Make Carpool Runs Sweeter?

TechCrunch is reporting on a nifty new app for the much anticipated Android phone from Google. It will be available in Google's Android Market.  SugarTrip uses the GPS feature on user's phones to gather data - indicating how far/fast the phones on that street are moving.  No guarantees that it will prevent tardy slips but it would be sweet to dodge some traffic every now and again. What's next, SugarShock for preventing run ins with exes and inlaws?

Is Your Booster Useless? Check This List!

The IIHS came out with a booster seat study today, highlighting the need for parents to be more conscious of their choice of carseats. A comprehensive study found that several popular models of booster seats were failing to do their job properly.

In a nutshell, belt positioning boosters only work to restrain and keep a child safe if the booster elevates the child to a seating position where a lap/shoulder belt fits across their body properly. A poor fit can actually increase the risk of abdominal injury in a crash. Although this premise is a simple one, the differences in the car seats and belts in various cars, and the assorted shapes and sizes of kids who might be seated in a booster, make evaluating booster seat fit complex and difficult. Additionally, boosters that can be used with and without the backrest portion, need to be evaluated as two separate entities.

In the end, the IIHS came out with a list of seats that performed (best and worst), when tested in several car models by an average sized six year old. Interestingly, many of the models that performed poorly are "convertible" styles that advertise themselves as the only seat you will ever need to buy. These same seats may have received favorable ratings in their five point harness and/or rear facing modes, but fall down miserably when used as a backless booster.

The study, while canning several models of boosters, is also a reminder of our need to be vigilant. It's not enough to pop our kids in a booster seat, if the seat does nothing to keep our kids safe. We need to check the belt fit in every car/booster combination that our children ride in. Also of note - price had little to do with the list of seats recommended. Favorable ratings were giving to seats in multiple price categories.

If nothing else, this study is a good argument to keep kids in five-point harnesses as long as possible.

The Chevy Traverse Ad - All You Ever Wished For?

"A sudden downpour of shoes..."

Is this all you've ever wished for? Chevy seems to think its target market dreams of footwear falling from the sky. Seems a little dangerous to me! I'm waiting for the vehicle that shows up on my doorstep with Mary Poppins at the wheel, the Brady Bunch's Alice riding shotgun and Rachel Ray in the backseat whipping up school lunches for my kids for the remainder of the year.

Use your iPhone for Road Testing

gtac.jpg

Journalists have long used those silly fifth-wheels and radar guns to measure the performance of the vehicles they are testing. Now that the iPhone has a built-in accelerometer (that's how it knows you turned it sideways) - it was only a matter of time before someone put it to good use.

Liberty For One's g-tac can measure 0-60 time, quarter mile time and trap speed, and even 60-0 braking distance.  There is a graph available that plots your last three runs.  g-tac is available on the iPhone App Store for $4.99 - that's cheaper than the gas required to run a quarter in a muscle car.

The World's Most Expensive Oil Change

The next time your mechanic dings you for a $20 Cabin Air Filter change, keep in mind that others are spending much more for similar service. The Sun is reporting that an unnamed Lamborghini Murcielago owner recently flew his supercar from Doha to London and back for a simple oil change.

qatarlambo_opt.jpgThe fluid change, which may or may not have included the dreaded cabin air filter add-on, cost a whopping £3,552 (roughly $7,000 USD.) Freight from Qatar to England and back - a 6,500 mile journey - is around £20,000 ($39,600) - bringing the total to over $46,000 for the entire shebang.

Environmental groups in the UK are expressing outrage, and as one Heathrow airport employee rightfully pointed out, it would have been much less expensive to fly a couple technicians first class to Qatar.

I'm not passing judgement here, I think the world needs supercars and Sheikhs to buy them. What do you think? Is this excess intolerable or is it just one person spending their money the way they please?

BMW To make 500 electric Minis for California

Autoweek is reporting that BMW's Mini division will be converting 500 Mini cooper vehicles to electric power for customers in California

mini.jpg

The electric Mini Coopers are being built at the Mini factory in Oxford, England, without engines, gearboxes or fuel tanks, then shipped to Munich, Germany, where they are being fitted with electric powertrains.

BMW sources told Automotive News Europe that 490 of the Minis will be leased to selected customers in California and 10 will be used as show cars.

The electric Minis are painted silver and have yellow roofs, the sources said.

BMW engineers working on the electric Minis are part of a new division called Project i established by the automaker to develop low-emission city cars.

The electric Minis will help BMW to meet new California regulations that will require carmakers selling cars in the state to offer zero emission vehicles.

Mini spokesman Cypselus von Frankenberg did not confirm that BMW is building electric Minis.

"BMW will announce whether it will build electric vehicles or not later this year," he told ANE.

Chrysler to offer unconnect wireless hotspot as $449 option

Chrysler announced pricing last week for its new unconnect web Wireless Internet Service, according to AutoWeek online.

Internet Service that will be provided by Autonet Mobile, costs $29 a month, with a $35 activation fee. One-, two- and three-year plans are available. The technology arrives in August as a Chrysler Mopar accessory.

No details as to what band and transfer rate the router utilizes or what connection speeds are offered by Autonet have been provided. Chrysler says the hot-spot connection has a radius of about 100 feet around the vehicle. It works wherever cell-phone service is available, and all passengers in the car can connect wi-fi-enabled devices, including laptops, PDAs and video-game consoles.

In a day and age when an industry-leading LinkSys WRT54G can be had at your local big-box retailer for under $50, this seems like another horribly overpriced Detroit option. Time will tell if wireless internet in the car will become de rigeur technology on down the road.

Honda begins FCX Clarity production

800px-FCX_Clarity.jpg

The New York Times reports that yesterday the first Honda FCX Clarity rolled off the production line in Takanezawa, Japan.

The hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle costs more than $100,000 to produce but is available to lease (only in California) for $600 per month. Honda officials chose California because of the high availability of hydrogen pumping stations.

The FCX Clarity looks like a cross between a Prius and a Mercedes CLS, is around the same size as an Acura RL, gets the equivalent of 74MPG, and can go 0-60 in under 9 seconds. One can expect to get 280 or so miles on a tank, and the best part: the only thing coming out of the tailpipe is steam.

Honda President Takeo Fukui handed Hollywood producer Ron Yerxa the keys to Clarity #001 and actress Jamie Lee Curtis will be receiving hers next week.

Be The Hoff with KITT-voiced GPS

knightridergps.jpg

The latest retro entry in the car market isn't a Beetle or Charger, it's a Knight Rider themed GPS unit from Mio.

According to Autoblog, the Knight Rider GPS will feature the voice of William Daniels, host of the original TV Series.  It will call you Michael, has a sweet animation of a Black Trans-Am for your current location, and has two awesome LEDs that mimic KITT's grill on the sides. No word yet on whether or not they oscillate or make that "woosh-woosh" sound, or if it includes a boost button that will alow you to jump small buildings and tractor trailers.

Under the hood it's the same old Mio GPS that you'd expect, features include a TFT Touch Screen and Points of Interest. The unit is expected to carry a $299 price tag.

Good Tips & Busted Myths on Fuel Economy

gasprices2.jpg

Consumer Reports has a new article up which Shows you how to get the best fuel economy from your current vehicle and dispels certain myths about improving economy.

We all know doing the double-nickel will save a few pennies per mile over driving 85, but are you aware of your tires' rolling resistance? Are they properly inflated? Do you have ski racks on your car in June?

Personally, I'm just happy they dispelled the myth that using the AC is worse than opening the windows. I love air conditioning!

New compact Porsche SUV: Don't call it a Roxster

Porsche_logo.jpg

A few weeks ago, Car and Driver published spy photos of what they believed was the forthcoming 2010 Porsche compact SUV.  Porsche brass have been vehemently denying the existance of such a car, but with the emergence of the Audi Q5 and VW Tiguan such a vehicle certainly seems possible.

The story was recently revised, however, claiming "Recent reports suggest these pictures show a next-gen 2011 Cayenne prototype, not Porsche's upcoming small SUV"

It certainly looks smaller to me. You be the judge.

Ford Escape Makeover Complete for '09

According to Autoweek, Ford gave the Escape and Mercury Mariner a full cosmetic facelift for the 2008 model year, and for 2009 the drivetrain options have also been completely redone.

The 3.0L V6 gets a 40 HP bump, and Ford Escape 2009 Makeoverthe inline 4 gets a 200 CC displacement bump as well as 18 more horses. Ford says MPG is up 1 mile per gallon across the board, despite a 2-second improvement in 0-60 times.  A Six-Speed automatic replaces the ancient 4-speed from 2008.

A smoother regenerative braking system on Hybrid models, roll stability control, new standard power steering, and new Michelin Latitude rubber round out the improvements, all of which are also applied to the Mariner.

Kia Soul To Go Onsale In Spring

Thumbnail image for kia_soul.jpg

Kia's Soul small 5-door people-mover, which Autoweek has dubbed a "Scion-fighter", will retain its show-car moniker and styling when it goes onsale next spring.

Aimed at the young-adult demographic, like the Scion xB, it may actually prove to be a nice thrifty alternative to the Compact SUV for small families.  As gas reaches towards $5 a gallon, I for one will have my eye on this segment in the coming months.

Here's a slick piece of Kia Soul video for your viewing pleasure:

New Dodge Caravan Receives Disappointing Crash Results

Jalopnik: 2008 Dodge Caravan Good Up Front, Can't Take It In The Rear

Dodge Caravan Crash TestJalopnik reports that the IIHS Crash Test results for the new 2008 Dodge Caravan are less than stellar.

The minivan, which is all new for 2008, received "good" marks in frontal and side impact crashes, which are improvements over the old model's "average" and "poor" performances, respectively. The problem area was the rear impact crash test, where the Caravan received "marginal" marks, the second lowest score.

The Honda Odyssey, Kia Sedona and Hyundai Entourage all have received "good" scores in all three tests.

Saturn's Newest Ad

Here's a sneak peak at the newest ad about to air for the Saturn Aura. I'm getting a Brady Bunch feeling from the beat and there is a little bit of a trippy eco-friendly twist to the ad. If only we could fill our tank for half of what the Brady's spent to fill their wagon, back in the day.

I'm seeing the return of sedan popularity with this ad. However for a family with four kids, such as mine, this vehicle is not an option.

Surf and Drive with Internet Access in Your Car

Wish that you had internet access in your car? The last time my family drove to the beach, my mind was whirring with ideas from an ongoing project. As we hit the road I found myself jonesing for an internet connection.

Imagine riding down the interstate while doing online research and updating your blog (from the passenger side please!). Think of the convenience of having another option for entertaining the kids in the back seat.

Chrysler is set to roll out their in-car Wi-Fi later this year, as part of an off-road navigation system for the Jeep Wrangler. Those of us with multiple kids, gear and dogs to haul may have to wait a little longer for an in dash system. But not much. Chrysler promises to equip many 2009 model cars with this technology.

BMW's timeline for Wi-Fi installation are less concrete. As of now their concept has only been seen at the Geneva Motor Show. BMW also promises an in-dash multimedia system that includes streaming music and video content through cellular or Wi-Fi connection. Files will be transferred to the 20GB hard drive from your PC or mobile phone.

Can't wait till 2009? Mobile internet is already available in the form of an in-car router from AutoNet Mobile. This technology is an aftermarket solution. Routers will cost you $595, plus a $39 monthly charge. This service turns your car into a Wi-Fi hotspot. No need to rely on cellular towers to guarantee continued connectivity.

At the moment, I'll still have to rely on my slower smart phone to surf the web. But we are not too far away from being able to surf the internet on the road.

Tell Us:Do you miss your connectivity while on the road? What would you use your on-the-road internet connection for? Leave us a comment below.

Wish You Were Here - And Now You Can Be...

Whether it's gloating over the perfect sunset at the beach, or your dad enjoying  the sight of your kids' first slide down a snow covered hill, it just got easier to share your travels with far flung friends and family. In real time. Qik.com has launched a site that lets you stream live video, right from your cell phone.

So in theory, you can take grandma with you, when you drive over the mountain and through the woods to grandma's house. Maybe she will have some suggestions on how to keep the kids entertained in the back seat? Or will want to take a turn at license plate bingo?

The possibilities for sharing your travel adventures and making up new games (guess which grocery store mommy is shopping in? springs to mind) are endless. And you have to admit, live streaming video sure beats the pants off those snail mail postcards we sent when we were kids.  Just don't abuse this technology folks. We don't need to see the restrooms at every pit stop!

Sticker Shock - Finding Yourself on the Back of your Car

To my right was a stick figure family of five, plus a cat named Murphy. And most impressively, right in front of me, in a massive suburban with plates that alluded to their faith was a family of six or seven kids. I'm not sure really, whether it was six or seven because I ran out of time to count the flip flops before the light changed to green.
